Bring back the paddle?

Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton suggested this week that Memphis City Schools should re-implement corporal punishment in grades K to 8.

The mayor, a former schools superintendent, said he knows his idea is controversial, but thinks it would help improve discipline among students.

The Memphis Board of Education banned the practice in 2005, but supporters of paddling have been campaigning since then to bring it back.

Many parents and teachers have complained about the district's Blue Ribbon behavior initative, saying it doesn't provide immediate consequences for students and leaves teachers with mounds of cumbersome paperwork.

Is Mayor Herenton right? Should the board bring back paddling for younger students?
