Houston falls in sudden-death overtime to undefeated Brentwood

After 102 minutes of scoreless soccer, Brentwood senior midfielder Jordan Homonnay tapped in the game winner past a diving Houston goalkeeper Will Powell to earn Brentwood a hard-earned 1-0 Class AAA state-title match victory in sudden-death overtime.

The Bruins, ranked No. 1 nationally, finished the year at 24-0. Houston, which dropped its only other game in its season-opener against Christian Brothers, finished the year at 19-2-1.

The Mustangs were seeking a record-tying sixth boys soccer state title.


Houston-Brentwood scoreless at the half

Houston has done a better job toward the end of the half winning balls and creating opportunities, but we remain scoreless midway through.

Interesting note: Brentwood senior goalie Jordan Leedle and senior forward Bradley Jacobs are both University of Memphis signees. Leedle is responsible for the Bruins 10 consecutive shutouts, and has registered 19 on the season. 


Houston-Brentwood Class AAA soccer state final underway

For the first time since 1994, Houston and Brentwood meet in a boys soccer state final.

We're eight minutes in, and undefeated Brentwood is controlling the pace early, with two shots on goal already. Houston hasn't yet attempted a shot.

Brentwood is ranked No. 1 in the nation in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas high school poll, having shut out 10 straight opponents.

Houston is in search of a state-record tying sixth boys soccer state title.

 


Get your kicks, CBHS falls in Pk’s

Two overtimes and two sudden death overtimes still couldn't settle the D2-AA game between Father Ryan and CBHS so it's on to penalty kicks.

Overtime again

CBHS scored shortly after the resumption of play after the weather delay to tie the score at 1-1. Both teams has numerous quality shots that didn't make it into the net.

Now another two 10 minute overtimes.


D2-AA halftime

Father Ryan and CBHS are tied 0-0 at half and both teams' goalies have been busy.

The skies are starting to darken at the soccer complex, so rain may be a factor before the game is over.

UPDATE -- Father Ryan scored a goal to go up 1-0, soon thereafter, lightning was sighted in the area and the game has been suspended until the storm cell passes.

UPDATE 2 -- Play has resumed after a 55-minute delay.

 


Golden goal

St. George's Matt Simms was in perfect position knock a bloop pass from Drew Schneider past Webb goalie Zach Crownover with 4:08 left in the second sudden death overtime to win the Division 2-A state title, 1-0.

CBHS vs. Father Ryan is up next for the D2-AA title.


Still scoreless

The soccer title game between Webb and St. George's is still 0-0 after the second half and two 10-minute overtimes.

The two teams will now have two 5-mintue sudden-death overtimes before going to penalty kicks to decide the Division 2-A title game.


Halftime at soccer

St. George's and Webb are tied 0-0 at half.

The Gryphons dictated the tempo all half and had several close scoring chances, but weren't able to ge the ball in the net.


D2-A Soccer

The teams are about to introduced at the D2-A soccer title game between St. George's and Webb-Bell Buckle.  The St. George's contingent is large and vocal.
