Can Memphis-area softball teams win the state?

By David Boyd
May 21st, 2008

On Tuesday at Day 1 of the Spring Fling, Memphis-area teams once again struggled against competition at the state. Only Covington was able to post a win.

Briarcrest jumped out to an early 1-0 lead over GPS, but the speed and bunting skills of the GPS team proved to be too much for the Lady Saints and GPS was able to pull out the 5-1 win.

In Class AAA, Houston was blanked (8-0) by state-power Ooltewah and in D2-A, FACS was also shutout (5-0) by Nashville's Davidson Academy.

Today at 10 a.m., two teams that seem to qualify every year for state, St. Benedict and Bolton will look to win their first round games.

Also, in D2-A St. George's and SBEC meet in a first-round game, so a Memphis team will have to advance to Thursday's winner brackt final against Davidson Academy.

Memphis softball teams have not been able to win a state title in any division since 1986. Will this be the year that someone breaks through?

Hutchison Tennis Prevails in Thriller, 4-3

By David Boyd
May 20th, 2008

In the most exciting tennis match of Day 1 at the MTSU tennis center, Hutchison outlasted Knoxville Webb in a D2-AA state semifinal, 4-3, in windy conditions.

The match was tied at 3-3, going into the final doubles match of the day. Eighth-grader Caroline Orr and senior Cary Cowart, prevailed 9-7 to send the Sting into Wednesday's championship match with GPS.

Other Memphis area teams struggled on Day 1. Two-time girls Class AAA champion Houston lost 4-1 to Tennessee High. Also, the White Station boys lost 4-2 in their semifinal match.

In D2-A, both girls team lost -- St. George's and Harding Academy.
